There are some stereotypes about students in the US—that they have little homework, that their teachers are too nice, that they have no rules to follow, that they are bad at math, that they don’t work hard like students in China. I would like to break these stereotypes.
Let’s take a look at the lives of American students. They get up at six in the morning for school. Many students take classes that are higher than their current (目前的) grade level.
There are lots of rules in their schools. Even nicknames (绰号) can be against the rules sometimes.
When school is over, there isn’t much homework. But there is more to do than that. Students have their choice of after-school activities, such as drama (戏剧),swimming, softball(垒球),golf, art, speech and debate (辩论) and many more. Students take these activities seriously (认真地). They don’t do them just once a week, as many Chinese students do, but for hours a day, every day of the week.
Students in the US might have more free time than those in China, but they are hard workers as well. Getting up early, skipping ( 跳过 ) grades, going to different activities...students, whether in China or the United States, should not be underestimated (低估).
46. Which word has the same meaning as “stereotype” in Paragraph 1?
A. kind
B. dislike
C. surprise
D. misunderstanding
47. What does the writer think of Chinese and US students?
A. US students have much more homework to do.
B. Chinese students get up earlier than US students.
C. US students do after-school activities more often.
D. Chinese students have more rules in their schools.
48. Why did the writer decide to write this story?
A. To change how people think about US students.
B. To encourage Chinese students to work as hard as US students.
C. To learn more about the rules in US schools.
D. To show how hard she works in the US.

Discussion: As a junior high school student, do you need your parents or teachers to be your life mentor (导师)?
Student A: As teenagers, we always have trouble in our lives.
Our parents and teachers wish us to solve (解决) problems by ourselves. But for many reasons (原因), we can’t easily solve them. So it becomes necessary (必需的) for us to have a mentor when we need help.
Student B: I once had a good mentor, so I agree with this idea.
Mentors are not like teachers. They can give students very useful advice and help. Because they have lots of experience.
What’s more, students won’t feel too nervous because they can talk with their mentors freely.
Student Student C: It’s embarrassing for students to talk about their own problems. In fact, not everyone can do this. There might also be a generation gap (代沟) between students and their mentors.
Student D:
Maybe students can get useful advice from experienced mentors. But I think, the more experience you get
from others, the less you will learn on your own. We should learn from our own experience. I like to have a life journey of my own with my own stories better.
49. For student A, having a life mentor is _______.
A. necessary
B. useless
C. nervous
D. exciting
50. Who does NOT like to have a mentor?
A. Students A& B
B. Students B&C
C. Students C&D
D. Students A& D
51. Student D thinks that a mentor _______.
A.wouldn’t truly understand him
B. might make him learn less on his own
C. would be very helpful to him

How much do you know about your neighbourhood? Can you remember your neighbours’ faces? Teenagers from Live Oak, California, US, would say yes. They took photos of their neighbours. Then they put the pictures on city walls.
The kids took part in an International photography activity. It’s called the Inside Out Project. It asks people around the world to take black and white photos of their neighbours. In this way, people can find and share something about the places where they live. People can upload (上传) pictures to the project’s website. Then the project makes large photos. They send these photos back to people to show in their communities (社区).
In Live Oak, you can see big pictures on the walls of a supermarket. Nicholas’ work almost covered one wall. He took a photo of an old man. “We call him ‘The Superman’,” said Nicholas’ friend, “Nicholas took that picture right outside the super-market down the street called ‘Super’. It’s been really great. We get to learn a lot about our community, and we meet people we never met before.”
Greg Stein is headmaster of Shoreline Middle School. He also joined in the activity. He

When you hold a birthday party, do you often decorate (装饰) it? If you do, how do you decorate it? Have you ever tried decorating your party with balloons?
Balloons are so pretty though balloon decoration takes too much time! If you want to make balloon decoration yourself, here is some advice.
First, the color of balloons has to fit into the theme (主题). It’s fun to have at least two colors of balloons but three colors are even more beautiful. As for what color to choose, you could ask others what they think.
Then, fill them up the day before the party. You could buy a balloon filler or invite the neighbourhood kids (that are invited to the party) over to fill up the balloons. Then hang them up the afternoon or night before the party.
Finally, find a proper (恰当的) place to hang the balloons. Personally I believe that one of the best places to hang balloons is right at the entrance of the party. That way the guests can see the balloons right at the beginning. And it helps them get excited. Another great place to put balloons is behind the cake table. It really adds value (价值) to the cake.
I hope these tips can help you. Happy balloon decorating!
