Walt Disney once said, “It was all started by a mouse”, but in fact, Disneyland started with a problem. Sitting on a bench in Griffith Park and watching his daughters on the carousel (旋转木马), he wondered, “Why isn’t there any sort of amusement experience that the entire family can enjoy together?”

His idea for displaying Disney characters in a fantasy setting was far away from amusement parks and carnivals (狂欢节) that offered rides, games and inexpensive food. Instead Disneyland was thought of as an extension (扩展) of the Disney brand, and would be the first “theme park” built in the United States.

When Disney decided that he would be building a place that told a story, he knew that he would need people and technology to help create the magic and tell the stories. In 1952, Disney collected together a staff of designers, planners and artists and formed WED business, standing for Walter Elias Disney. The WED group began a long time of creative brainstorming. Its members designed and reworked Walt’s broad ideas. They visited other amusement attractions around the country to gather data and impressions and improved development plans, and created a rough construction (建设) timetable.

Construction for Disneyland began on July 21, 1954,just 12 months before the park was scheduled to open.Construction companies worked busily to meet the tight schedule and completed the project on time.Disneyland was formally opened a year later, on July 17, 1955, to excited visitors.Unlike other amusement parks of the day, Disneyland was developed and constructed to be instantly recognizable as an extension of the Disney brand and the Disney idea. The rides used a wide range (范围) of Disney themes, costumed Disney characters wandering around the park, and Sleeping Beauty Castle, the attraction at the heart of the park, was instantly recognized by millions of people since it was seen every Sunday night of ABC television.

Out of Walt Disney’s unpleasant experience as a father taking his daughters to an amusement park has come the multi-billion dollar industry of modern theme parks. Disney’s theme parks dominate (占优势) tourism on both coasts, as well as in Paris and in Tokyo.Disneyland became, in a way, the top of Walt Disney’s career.

The 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to US poet Louise Glück“for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere(朴素的)beauty makes individual existence universal”.

Born in 1943 in New York and living in Cambridge,Glück is also a professor of English at Yale University.Glück has received several influential awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 and the National Book Award in 2014.Glück,the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, has published 12 collections of poetry and some volumes of essays on poetry.

Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee, said Glück's works are“characterized by a striving for.charity.Childhood,family life and the close relationship with parents and siblings are themes that have remained central with her.”Olsson added,“In her poems, the self listens for what is left of its dreams and delusions. But even if Glück would never deny the significance of the autobiographical background, she is not to be regarded as a confessional poet.”

Glück is described as“not only engaged by the errancies(错误状态)and shifting conditions of life, she is also a poet of radical change and rebirth, where the leap forward is made from a deep sense of loss”.The poet found a growing audience in the United States and abroad with collections such as The Triumph of Achilles published in 1985 and Ararat in 1990.

The Nobel Committee said,“The natural tone in Glück's poems is striking. We encounter straightforward images of painful family relations. It is candid and uncompromising, with no trace of poetic ornament.”

“The reader is again struck by the presence of voice and Glück approaches the theme of death with remarkable grace and lightness. She writes narrative poetry recalling memories and travels, only to hesitate and pause for new insights. The world is disenthralled(解放的),only to become magically present once again.”Olsson concluded.

It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called“Headstart” was started in the US in 1965.A lot of money was poured into it.It took children into preschool institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Headstart” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment.

To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child's first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The fouryear study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socioeconomic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development.

At three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socioeconomic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds or family structure. The one factor that was found to affect the child's development was the poor quality of parentchild interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.

The “Missouri” program compares quite distinctly with the “Headstart” program.Without a similar focus of parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome education unfairness.

12.What caused the failure of the “Headstart” program?

A.The large number of poor families. B.The disapproval from children.

C.The late start of the program. D.The long period of time.

13.What do we know about the “Missouri” program?

A.It focused on the children's first school teachers. B.It helped the children return to the same home.

C.It made the children improved in many aspects. D.It gave the parents advice on their development.

14.According to the passage, what is likely to influence children's performance?

A.The number of family members. B.The teacherstudent relationship.

C.The intelligence of their parents. D.The parentchild communication.

15.How does the author develop the passage?

A.By listing figures. B.By making comparisons.

C.By presenting ideas. D.By drawing conclusions.

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.

Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me a $ 10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way.

It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging (慢跑)around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing.

Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $ 10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed(性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.

I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
