During 20 years of working at his family’s supermarket, José Luis-Reig, known as Pep, never gave a thought to the world of academia(学术界). It was only when visiting the classrooms of universities with his two teenage daughters that he suddenly felt himself at home among ‘the atmosphere of learning’.
After school Pep had intended to study biology but was called on to help run the family business instead. When he was at school, he developed a reputation for helping others and so was invited onto the local radio, where the presenter said. “You’re like a young psychologist(心理学家).”
Pep was no stranger to change. The family business had originally been a sawmill(锯木厂). But when Pep, then 27, was asked if he wanted to take over, he decided to change the mill into the town’s first supermarket.
One day in the shop, the radio presenter’s comment came back to him. After running the idea past his family, he applied to a university in Palma to study psychology and, aged 46, was accepted.
“I had to get used to being much older than the other students.” he says. “But I ended up helping the others because I’d had more life experience.” Pep came top of his year and impressed his tutors(导师)so much that he was offered a job researching and teaching. Now 52, and still in the job. He adds, “My only regret is not having done it earlier.”
The traditional view used to be that, while making changes in your youth was acceptable, you should then settle on a career and stick to it. But today record numbers of 50-and 60-somethings are choosing to take on new challenges. Job satisfaction becomes increasingly significant when you’ve only got a few miles on the clock.

When you praise a dog, it’s listening to not just the words you say but also how you say them. That might not be huge news to dog owners. But now researchers have explored this phenomenon by using an imaging machine to look inside the brains of 13 dogs as they listened to their owners’ voice.
The reward pathway in the dogs’ brains lit up when they heard both praising words and an approving intonation (语调)—but not when they heard random (随机的) words spoken in a praising tone or praising words spoken in a flat tone, according to the researchers.
“Dogs deal with both what we say and how we say it in a way which is amazingly similar to how humans do it,” says Attila Andics, a neuroscientist in Hungary. When dogs hear speech, he explains, they seem to separate the meaning of words from the intonation. Then the left hemisphere (半球) of the brain deals with meaning, while intonation is dealt with in the right hemisphere.
All the dogs in the study were willing volunteers and were trained not to move in the scanner (扫描器). The dogs could get up and leave the machine whenever they wanted. But it was clear to the dogs that their human companions loved it when they did this very easy task. “They were really happy to take part,” says Andics. “The difficulty of the training was that they can’t move more than 3 millimeters in any direction, otherwise we will have to throw out all of the data.”
He says most dog owners have experimented with trying to “trick” their dogs by saying nonsense words in a cheerful, happy tone of voice. “I think the big difference here is that they only heard us, and they didn’t see us,” says Andics, because the dogs were inside the machine. “Here, the only information they had was the speech signal. What we saw is that for praise to be dealt with as a reward, when there is no other supporting information, both word meaning and intonation have to fit.”
28.What is regarded as a reward by dogs according to the study?
A.Praising words in a flat tone. B.Random words in a flat tone.
C.Praising words in a praising tone. D.Random words in a praising tone.
29.How do dogs deal with what they hear?
A.Focus more on the meaning. B.Focus more on the intonation.
C.Use information from their peers. D.Use the two parts of the brain.
30.What is a hard part of the training in Andics’opinion?
A.Looking into the dogs’ brain activity.
B.Training dogs to stay still in the machine.
C.Keeping dogs separated from their owners.
D.Asking dogs to get up and leave the scanner.
31.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Dogs Understand Tone and Meaning of Words
B.Dogs Indeed Know How to Praise
C.Dogs Can Recognize Owners’ Voices
D.Dogs Can Read Man’s Moods

In the coming decade, space agencies and private space companies like SpaceX are planning to build a base on the Moon and Mars. While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrogen (氢). But a group of scientists is working on turning CO2 in the atmosphere into jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO2 and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO2, it may be a feasible solution.
For now the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO2 every year, to battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.
The concept of turning CO2 into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely on expensive catalysts (催化剂) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO2 into liquid fuel. As the process would not require using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbon neutral (碳中和的).
The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO2 into new chemicals. About 48 percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in the production of plastic.
Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO2 collected can be used as an energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”
32.Which word can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1?
A.Unique. B.Practical. C.Time-tested. D.Quick.
33.What problem does the aviation industry face?
A.It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage.
B.The traditional jet fuel is much too expensive.
C.Climate change partly disturbs long-distance flights.
D.Its alternative energy resources are not powerful enough.
34.What do we know about the Oxford scientists’ method of fuel-making?
A.It is green and cost-saving.
B.It is complex and time-consuming.
C.It runs tests in natural environment.
D.It starts with immediate chemical reaction.
35.What’s the purpose of the author?
A.To attract people to explore the space.
B.To inform us of a breakthrough in fuel research.
C.To warn us the dangers of climate change.
D.To encourage us to work in the aviation industry.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. 36 Yet language is not the only way to express our ideas and feelings. Body movement, eye contact, gesture, and facial expression are other forms of language we call nonverbal communication. 37 According to Social Anthropologist, Edward T. Hall, in a normal conversation between two persons, less than 15% of social meaning is transmitted (传达) by words.
Different cultures have different ways of using nonverbal communication and people have different gestures to convey their expressions. However, nonverbal communication, like traffic, is not random (随意的);it has a purpose. 38 Learning the different common rules of body language in different cultures is very useful for us to understand each other better.
People coming from the same culture share common understanding by using the same body language such as eye management, facial expressions, gestures, and body movements. 39 For example, “arms”, which are used little by Nordics during a conversation, are an important element in one’s communicative weaponry (武器) in Italy, Spain, and South America. 40 In these cultures, one should stand with feet pressed together and hands interlaced (交错) in front of the body. In cultures such as America, where you often stand with your feet shoulderlength apart, arms at your side, standing in this fashion might be interpreted as being shy and insecure.
A.Misuse of body language can be unpleasant.
B.And there are common rules to guide its flow.
C.Without language, culture would not be possible.
D.Body language makes up the largest part of our nonverbal communication.
E.But in different cultures nonverbal communication takes on different patterns.
F.If you’ re learning a new language, a great way is to watch movies and TV shows.
G.In Africa, standing in a too “open” fashion, means that your posture might be inappropriate.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea; the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year,I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens,I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.
