B

“Hi! How are you?” The woman smiled as she took the seal next to me

on the airplane. She had to lower herself slowly, trying hard to push her

fat body into the seat, filling all available space.

I didn't reply and moved a little towards the window. She repeated her

greeting in a friendly voice.

“Hi, ” I replied.

“My name is Laura, I ’m form Britain. How about you?” she talked

excitedly. “Malaysia. ” I said coldly.

Laura started a conversation with me, talking no notice of my unfriendly

reactions. Her voice was warm and caring. She was thoughtful. When we were

served drinks and meals she made sure that I had room to move in my seat.

“I don't want to make you uncomfortable with my elephant size! ” she said

with great sincerity( 真诚).

To my surprise, the face that I had dislike hours before slowly showed

nice smile --- lively and calm at the same time. I couldn't help but let

down my guard.

Laura was interesting. During our conversation, Laura managed to make

4

every person on the

plane who served us walk away laughing at her jokes,

I asked Laura, “Have you ever thought about losing some weight? You

aren't worried about the diseases that come with being overweight? ”

“Not at all, because I eat healthily and walk regularly, ” she said.

“This may not be scientific, but I believe in my heart that the people who

get diseases are the ones who worry all the time, I'm this size because I

was born to be big! There is more to life than worrying about weight all

day long. ”

She drank her wine. “Besides, God gives me so much happiness that I need

a bigger body to hold all of it! If I lose weight, I'll lose my happiness. ”

Surprised by her unusual reasoning, I smiled. I suddenly realized that

Laura was the most beautiful woman I had ever met in my life.

B. The writer had hoped to enjoy the trip alone.

C. The writer didn't like Laura's size.

D. The writer was not good at making friends.

5

[ 解析] 定位到第一段最后一句话“ she had to lower herself slowly, trying

hard to push her fat body into the seat, filing all available space" 可

十一行的句子"to my surprise, the face that I had disliked hours before

slowly showed a nice smile --- lively and calm all the same time. I couldn't

21.Laura thought that .

A. being yourself is important to keep healthy

6

bigger body to hold all of it If I lose weight. I'll lose my happiness"

三行的句子"If I lose weight, I'll lose my happiness." 可知B 选项错误;

从文章

倒数第六的句子“ believe in my heart that the people who get diseases are

the ones who worry all the time ”可知C、D 选项错误。

22.What can you learn from this story?

A. No news is good news. B. The early bird catches the worm.

C. Don't judge a book by its cover. D. One tree can't make a forest.

C

Many people spend their vacations doing nothing on a beach, but Kirsty

Ross wanted to do something different. “I spent three weeks working in

the hot sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates, ” she says.

“I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. My friends though

I was crazy, but I had an amazing time. It was my best vacation ever! ”

Kirsty was working for a volunteer program in Tunisia in North Africa.

Groups of twenty-five young volunteers work together on archaeological

sites to find important information about the past. The volunteers have

to be very careful, because it's important not to damage the things they

find. Many of them work at Tunisia's biggest archaeological site in Carthage,

but some of them work in other important sites in the country.

Kirsty explains why she chose this vacation. “I've always been

interested in history, and

4000-121-121

Tunisia has a lot of very important archaeological sites. People were

living in Carthage 3,000 years ago. I love being in places that are

so old. It was exciting to find pots and other things that people used

every day. ”

It was harder for Kirsty than for some of the others. “I come from

8

Alaska which is a cold place. ” She says. “It was hard for me to

work under the hot North African sun. But it was a wonderful chance

to meet people from other countries and to learn about the past. It

changed my life. Now I'm hoping to learn more about it in college. ”

23.The underlined word “damage” means in the second paragraph.

A. hide B. break C. lose D. steal

[ 解析] 从文章第二段"the volunteers have to be careful ”进行判断,

和A 选项hide( 藏) ,C 选项lose( 失去,丢失) 以及D 选项steal( 偷) 没有联

24.. All the following about Kirsty are true EXCEPT .

A. Kirsty thought the archaeology work was hard but interesting.

B. Kirsty spent three weeks working for the volunteer program.

C. Kirsty was excited about finding things people used every day.

D. Kirsty enjoyed working under the sun in Tunisia very much.

9

[ 解析] 从文章最后一段“ was harder for Kirsty than for some of the

others ” 以及“ It was harder for me to work under the hot North African

一段“I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. My friends

thought I was crazy, but I had an amazing time. It was my best vacation

ever! ” 可知A 选项正确;根据第一段“ I spent three weeks working in

the hot sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plat es, ”可知B 选

It was exciting to find pots and other things

that people used every day.

25 According to the passage, Kirsty may hope to study in college.

A. the art of designing buildings. B. people's lives in other countries

C. cultures and things of the past. D. animals and their living habits.

It was a wonderful chance to meet people from other

countries and

4000-121-121

to learn more about the past. Now I'm hoping to learn more about it

in college." 并结合全文Kirst 参加的是考古志愿者活动,因此之后想要学

习更多的应该是和文化还有过去事务相关的工作,因此选C。

26.What's the main purpose of the passage?

10

A. To tell us the reason why Kirsty likes archaeology.

B. To let us know the importance of archaeology.

C. To give an example of an archaeology vacation.

D. To ask more people to join their volunteering work.

D

When you look at a giraffe, what do you see? Some people see the

characteristics of four animals a leopard's coat, a camel's head and

neck, a cow's feet, and a snake for a tongue. Why does the giraffe have

so many different characteristics? The giraffe needs all of its

characteristics to survive (continue to live).

Giraffes are very tall and have long necks for two reasons. First,

they eat from the tops of very tall trees. Second, they need to see

over the tops of the

11

trees. They can see danger, like a lion from far

away. Then they have time to run away or hide.

The giraffe's coat is also important to its

survival. It has brown spots and is very thick.

The spots help the giraffe hide among the trees.

The giraffe's thick coat protects it from the

sun.

Two other important characteristics of the giraffe are its large eyes

and long thick eyelashes. With its large eyes it can see very well. The

eyelashes protect its eyes. The giraffe sees better than most other large

animals in Africa.

A giraffe's feet and legs are also important characteristics. The

giraffe uses them for protection. It has hard feet, like a cow. It also

has very strong legs. If a lion comes too close, the giraffe can kick

it on the head. That usually kills the lion.

One last characteristic is the giraffe's long black tongue. It is

about 18 inches long. With their tongues, giraffes get food far above

their heads. They also clean their eyes and ears with their

tongues. Why is the giraffe's tongue black? The color protects it from the

sun.

Maybe the giraffe looks like four animals, but of course we know that

it is not. It is one animal, with many different characteristics. Its

12

characteristics help it survive.

27.Whichofthe following characteristic for a giraffe to survive is

no1mentioned?

A. Large ears. B. Long neck. C. Black tongue. D. Thick eyelashes.

特征: long necks(B) ,coat ,large eyes, long and thick eyelashes(D) ,feet and

legs ,以及l ong black tongue (C) ,因此没有提及的是l arge ears ,因此选A。

28.. According to the passage, which of the following is RIGHT about giraffes?

A. Giraffes are so tall that they can't hide among the trees.

B. Giraffes can use their soft feet to kill lions sometimes.

C. Giraffes always clean their necks with their black tongues.

D. Giraffes have thick coats to protect themselves from the sun.

[ 解析] 文章第三段最后一句话“ the giraffe's thick coat protects from the

13

Giraffes are very tall... They

can see danger, like a lion away. Then they have time to run away or hide

可知是 hide from danger, 但没有提到是否能 hide among the trees; 在第五

段提及hard feet like a cow ,所以B 选项中soft 不符合;第六段提及“ They

also clean their eyes and cars with their tongues( 用舌头去清理眼睛和耳

29. The passage mainly tells us that .

A. giraffes, camels, leopards and cows look the same.

B. giraffes have the characteristics of many animals.

C. giraffes" special characteristics help them survive.

D. giraffes learn these characteristics from others.

30. Which of the following shows the structure( 结构)of the passage?(P =

Paragraph)

14

necks, coat, large eyes, long and thick eyelashes, feel and legs, 以及l ong

My reading habits

I usually spend about 5 hours reading each week. My favorite type of

books are novels, especially science fictions. And I am used to reading

them before going to bed for an hour every day. On weekends, my parents

often take me to some bookstores to buy some books. And they also give

me advice on books. As for me, I like reading from my childhood. In my

opinion, books can not only bring a lot of knowledge to me but also widen

my eyes. Knowledge is power, and books are full of knowledge. If everyone

can spend a little time reading every day, I think he or she will be wiser

and the world will be a better place.
