There are over 800 boarding schools in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the country. But the earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only. Now both boys and girls can go to boarding schools from the age of 7 to 18.
What to do?
In the UK, boarding schools have three terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term.Students study and live together. They can't go outside if they are not allowed to. In some schools, each student has his or her subject plan. Besides the usual classrooms and laboratories, the boarding schools have lots of other facilities for their students, including music rooms, boats, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres. Most boarding schools have a “light-out” time. So when it's time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. There are house-mastersto take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
What to wear?
Nearly all students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.
____________?
In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simply bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. And there is always self-service for salad (沙拉), other side dishes and a dessert. 第二节 阅读下列信息,请从以下选项中选出符合题目的选项,其中有一项是多余选项。
A. Ask questions.
B. Keep your smart phone away
C. Think before responding(回应)
D. Use positives (积极的) body language
E. Pay attention to the speaker's mistakes.
F. Share what you have done in a similar situation.
It's important for everyone to learn how to be a better listener. Here are some tips about it.
(31)________
If someone is ready to open up to you, and you sit back with your arms crossed and don’t say a word, they’re
not going to say much. To encourage someone to keep talking, you should turn your head and body to face them and by making eye contact(接触).
(32)________
Asking questions is one of the best to show you’re interested. If someone is telling you about their ski trip, don’t respond with, “that’s nice”. Instead, you can ask, “How long have you been skiing?” or “What was your favorite part of the trip?”. The person will think highly of you because you have asked a few questions.
(33)________
After the speaker has finished talking, a good listener may take some time before responding. Simply take a few seconds to think or say. “Give me a second to think about that.” Doing either makes the speaker first feel you’re listening to what they’re saying. Then they will know you want to be thoughtful in your response.
(34)________
Watching you phone while trying to listen usually leads missing some part of the conversation and to the person talking feeling like he or she is not listened to. So put that phone down while listening if you don’t need it to check something or write something down as a part of the conversation.
(35)________
When asked for advice while listening or when it seems appropriate (适当的) ---not when the other person just
needs to express and get things out---share what you have done in the same situation or a similar one and what worked well for you.
